Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of sewing!​

I will be guiding you through this sewing machine course with videos, information and tips.

 

Whether you're interested in making pillows and stuffed animals or you're planning to sew a new wardrobe I hope you enjoy sewing as much as I do!

STep 1 - Getting Ready TO SEW!

We'll be covering:

  1. What You Need In Your Sewing Space

​

  • Excellent Lighting. Natural light is ideal for sewing and crafting but good overhead lighting is important if natural light is not available.

  • Storage Solutions. A tidy workspace helps to keep your mind tidy too!

  • Cutting Table. In addition to a sewing table, for laying out and cutting fabric and patterns.

  • Sewing Machine. We recommend this one.

  • A Sewing Table.

  • Comfortable Seating. A chair with a back

  • Marking Tools. We love Frixion Markers!

  • Iron & Ironing Board

2. Setting Up A New Sewing Machine

We'll show you how to unpack and set up your new machine.

​

Remove machine from box and remove all tape and packaging. In addition to the sewing machine you should have:

​

  • Foot pedal

  • Power Cord

  • Quilter Tray

  • Instruction Manual

  • Ziploc bag of accessories

  • White pouch containing accessories (inside sewing machine)

STEP 2 - Introduction To Sewing!

Congratulations!

You have set up your machine, watched all the videos and you are ready to start sewing!

​

To get to know your machine we will start with our beginner project, the "Introductory Felt Pouch". In addition to getting a feel for your new machine you will learn:

​

  • straight stitching

  • reverse or back stitching

  • pivots

  • curves

  • sewing on a button (by hand)

​

At the end of this section you will be the proud owner of a pouch which you can use to keep your sewing tools in!

You will need:-

  • Sewing machine (threaded and bobbin inserted)

  • Project:

    • Introductory Felt Pouch

      • Button

      • Hand sewing needle

  • Scissors

  • Seam ripper

  • Pins

  • Pincushion

  • Video:

    • Go through set up, anatomy, safety, threading​

    • Test that the machine is threaded correctly by stitching on a piece of scrap fabric (make sure stitch is 00, tension is 4 and speed is on SLOW)

    • Start with straight lines

    • Pivots

    • Zigzags

    • Curves

    • Button

    • Stitch sides

    • Buttonhole

STEP 3 - Bookmark

You are ready to sew with woven fabric! By making the bookmark you will learn about:

​

  • Seam allowances

  • Pinning

  • Straight stitching

  • Reverse or "back" stitching

  • Inserting a ribbon or tassel

  • Working with interfacing

You may be tempted to turn up the speed on your machine. Beware of going too fast too soon as going fast increases mistakes and fixing mistakes takes time!

You will need:-

  • Sewing machine threaded and bobbin inserted

  • Project:

    • Bookmark

      • Ribbon​/Tassel

      • Interfacing

  • Scissors

  • Seam ripper

  • Pins

  • Pincushion

  • Video:

    • Go through safety and threading​

    • Test that the machine is threaded correctly by stitching on a piece of scrap fabric (make sure stitch is 00, tension is 4 and speed is on SLOW)

    • Start bookmark

STEP 4 - Pillow

Things are getting exciting now as everyone loves to make a pillow! Skills include:

​

  • Learning about seam allowances

  • Pinning

  • Straight stitch

  • Reverse or "back" stitch

  • Pivoting

  • Clipping corners

  • Sewing with "right sides together"

  • Leaving an opening for turning

  • Turning an item to the right side

  • Ironing

  • Stuffing

  • Stitching the opening closed

  • Video:

    • Go through safety and threading​

    • Test that the machine is threaded correctly by stitching on a piece of scrap fabric (make sure stitch is 00, tension is 4 and speed is on SLOW)

    • Start bookmark

You will need:-

  • Sewing machine threaded and bobbin inserted

  • Project:

    • Pillow

      • Fabric front and back​

      • Stuffing

  • Scissors

  • Seam ripper

  • Pins

  • Pincushion

STEP 5 - Tote Bag

You have done a great job so far and you've learnt so much! The tote bag is the final project of this course and includes the following skills:

​

  • Sewing a pocket

  • Making and attaching handles

  • Learning about seam allowances

  • Pinning

  • Straight stitch

  • Reverse or "back" stitch

  • Pivoting

  • Clipping corners

  • Sewing with "right sides together"

  • Turning an item to the right side

  • Ironing

You will need:-

  • Sewing machine threaded and bobbin inserted

  • Project:

    • Tote Bag

      • Fabric front and back​

      • Pocket fabric front and back

      • Fabric for straps

  • Scissors

  • Seam ripper

  • Pins

  • Pincushion
