We always get asked what the must haves are for sewing enthusiasts, whether they are beginners or experienced sewers, so we thought we'd put together a list of Sew Happy's best recommendations. Perfect for both the holidays or birthdays throughout the year. Kim Mulcahy, our founder, walks through her favorites in this video and you'll find the links to each product below.
These are the products we love at many price points from a sewing machine, to pins and needles, threads, markers, material and more. Most are available at Amazon or your local arts and crafts stores. We hope these help your children, nieces and nephews, and friends develop their creative love of sewing.
This is the machine we currently use at our studio and the one we recommend for kids and adults. We 
Crochet Yarn 
Frixion Markers - We use these for marking fabric, they are heat erasable, a great addition to any s 
Fabric Scissors Gingher or Fiskars are great brands. Keep these scissors for cutting fabric only as 
Pins are essential for any sewer. These are long but some shorter ones would be good to have 
Pincushion: These traditional tomato pincushions are a must-have. 
Magnetic Pin Dish: An alternative to the tomato pincushion. 
Sewing Basket: Great for keeping sewing supplies together. An "Art Bin" also works well. 
Assorted hand sewing needles- good for different tasks 
Stuffing Fill for Pillows Etc 
Bobbin Case: Keeps bobbins neat and tidy 
Seam Ripper: A larger one is better for unpicking stitches 
Sewing Machine Thread: Buy good quality threads like Coats & Clark or Guttermann. 
Needle Threader 
Quilter's Ruler :Handy for drawing lines on fabric, we use these a lot in the studio. 
Assorted Felt: Choose the soft felt rather than stiff. 
Fabric Markers: Permanent markers for embellishing projects 
Tape Measure: Essential for students interested in fashion design and making garments. 
Assorted Buttons: Always come in handy for both practical and decorative purposes. 
Fabric Squares These "fat quarters" are 18" x 21", a perfect size for beginner projects. 
Doll Mannequin: perfect for children is this 18" pinnable mannequin 
Sewing Project Book- Lots to choose from but we like this one. 
Sewing Softies: Inspiration for kids 8-12 to create their own softies- great book!
