After School Program

Covid Update

After great success with our virtual camps we are now offering our virtual after school program. Please click here to email us if you are interested in having Sew Happy Virtual at your school!

We are following the format of our successful virtual summer camps to bring our sewing program to elementary school children starting September 2020.

Our instructors will be the "live" host of each 10 week program and will lead the students through the class using short videos to show clear and precise instructions.

All of our experienced instructors are trained in classroom management and we have adapted this to fit with the virtual environment so that we can deliver the most successful program possible.

Why we think our virtual program works -

  • Sense of School Community

  • Kids will feel connected with other kids in the school community

  • Life Skill

  • Kids will learn a life skill which is very relevant to the current situation

  • New Interest

  • Kids can work on their new sewing skills to keep them occupied at times when they would usually be busy

  • Therapeutic

  • Sewing is a great activity to relieve stress and anxiety

What a virtual sewing class is like -

  • Welcome Time

  • Each session will start off with an "interactive" 10 - 15 minute period which includes instructor and student introductions, class rules and a chance for everyone to take a turn to speak by telling a fun fact about themselves or the instructor may choose to play a fun ice-breaker game.

  • Sewing

  • Our instructors will teach sewing skills using a combination of short videos which show clear and precise step-by-step instructions with input and further explanation from the instructor whilst checking for understanding. This activity will last for 35 - 40 minutes. (Instructional videos of threading a needle, tying a knot, simple stitches and the lock stitch will be available to students so they can practice outside of the class).

  • Clean-up

  • At Sew Happy we believe that cleaning-up is an important part of the class so we spend a few minutes having students tidy up their work area making sure to put needles, pins and scissors in a safe place and to put their supplies away for the next class.

  • Wind Down

  • The last 5 minutes of class is spent playing a quick game of something like "Would you rather..." where the students have another opportunity to interact with each other.

Frequently Asked Questions -

  • What projects do you offer?

  • Our projects are all designed by Sew Happy, made from felt from recycled water bottles and printed and packaged in Indiana. They include Narwhal Bunting, Hedgehog House, Llama Drama, Selfie Tote Bag, Ice Cream Composition Book Cover, 18" Doll Outfits, Daxie Days, Emoji Pillow and Fox In A Sleeping Bag.

  • What age group are your classes for?

  • Students in Grades 1 - 5

  • What supplies do you provide?

  • In addition to the felt fabric we also supply for each student: 2 needles, 2 needle threaders, a pincushion, pins, a pair of scissors, a ruler, 2 spools of thread and stuffing (if required for project).

  • What if a student needs help?

  • Due to the nature of this activity there may be occasions when a child needs assistance "in-person" and for that reason we do suggest that an adult is close-by (in shouting distance). We understand that the first couple of weeks can be tricky as a student who is new to sewing learns how to thread a needle, tie a knot etc. and for that reason we provide instructional videos for students and caregivers to practice outside of the class time. In most cases students learn the skills within 2 or 3 weeks and are able to continue with little to no assistance "in-person".
