More Than Just a Part-Time Job: Why We're Looking for Special People to Join the Sew Happy Team
One of the questions I get asked most often is, "How do you find all of your wonderful instructors?"
The honest answer is... it's not easy!
I'm not looking for expert sewers or people with years of teaching experience. Those things are certainly helpful, but they're not what make someone a great Sew Happy instructor.
What I'm really looking for are kind, patient people who love encouraging children.
People who understand that sewing is just the beginning.
It's About So Much More Than Sewing
When I started Sew Happy over a decade ago, my dream wasn't simply to teach children how to thread a needle or sew a straight stitch.
My dream was to give children something that seems increasingly rare today—time away from screens to create something with their own hands.
Every afternoon, I watch children walk into our sewing clubs carrying tablets, phones and busy minds. Then something wonderful happens.
The room becomes quieter.
Children begin talking to one another.
They help each other.
They solve problems.
They laugh.
And before long they're completely absorbed in creating something they never imagined they could make.
Watching a child hold up a finished project and proudly say, "I made this!" never gets old.
We're Looking for People Who Want to Make a Difference
This isn't really a job for people looking for a job.
It's a wonderful opportunity for people looking for purpose.
Perhaps you've recently retired.
Maybe your own children have grown up and you're ready for a new chapter.
Perhaps you've stepped away from a corporate career and want to do something that feels more meaningful.
Or maybe you're a college student studying fashion, education, art or design who would love experience working with children.
If you've ever thought, "I'd love to do something that really makes a difference," then I'd love to hear from you.
You Don't Need to Be an Expert Sewer
One thing that surprises many people is that you don't need advanced sewing skills to become part of our team.
If you know the basics and enjoy working with children, we'll teach you everything else.
Our instructors receive training, detailed lesson plans, beautiful projects and ongoing support from our experienced team.
Teaching experience is a huge advantage, but it's certainly not essential.
Kindness, patience, enthusiasm and reliability matter just as much.
Where You'll Teach
Sew Happy is based in our lovely studio in Mamaroneck, New York, where we develop our curriculum, design our projects and train our instructors.
Our instructors then travel to local elementary schools throughout Westchester County, New York City and Fairfield County, Connecticut to lead our after-school sewing clubs.
Whenever possible, we match instructors with schools close to where they live, helping them become part of their own local communities.
Most of our classes take place for just one hour in the afternoon, typically between 3:00 and 4:00 pm, and many of our instructors teach two to five afternoons each week.
